Southbank<\/b> is an inner urban neighbourhood of Melbourne<\/a>, Victoria<\/a>, Australia<\/a>, 1 km south of the Melbourne central business district<\/a>. Its local government area<\/a> are the cities of Melbourne<\/a> and Port Phillip<\/a>. At the 2011 Census<\/a>, Southbank had a population of 11,235. Its southernmost area is considered part of the central business district of the city. Southbank is bordered to the north by the Yarra River<\/a>, and to the east by St Kilda Road<\/a>. Southbank’s southern and western borders are bounded by Dorcas Street, Kings Way, the West Gate Freeway<\/a> and Montague Street.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Southbank was formerly an industrial area and part of South Melbourne<\/a>. It was transformed into a densely populated district of high rise apartment and office buildings beginning in the early 1990s, as part of an urban renewal<\/a> program. With the exceptions of the cultural precinct along St Kilda Road, few buildings built before this time were spared by redevelopment.<\/p>\n

Today, Southbank is dominated by high-rise development. It is one of the primary business centres in Greater Melbourne, being the headquarters of Treasury Wine Estates<\/a>, Crown Limited<\/a>, Alumina<\/a>, Incitec Pivot<\/a>, The Herald & Weekly Times<\/a> (including the Herald Sun<\/a><\/i>), as well as regional offices of many major corporations, in a cluster of towers with over 340,000 square metres of office<\/a> space in 2008. It is also one of the most densely populated areas of Melbourne, with a large cluster of apartment towers<\/a>, including Australia’s tallest tower measured to its highest floor, the Eureka Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Southbank Promenade and Southgate Restaurant and Shopping Precinct, on the southern bank of the Yarra River<\/a>, extending to Crown Casino<\/a>, is one of Melbourne’s major entertainment precincts. Southgate’s landmark Ophelia<\/i> sculpture by Deborah Halpern<\/a> has been used to represent Melbourne in tourism campaigns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
